Brief Life History of Wiremu Ihaka Te Herehere – b1875 – d1949

When Wiremu Ihaka Te Herehere Ututaonga was born on 3 June 1875, in Paihia, Northland, New Zealand, his father, Wiremu Ihaka Tihei Ututaonga, was 36 and his mother, Maraea Te Hei Pounamu Cook, was 34. He married Kirikiri Or Ngakirikiri Keretene or Cherrington (b1887 – d1958) about 1900, in Auckland, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 9 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 4 September 1949, in his hometown, at the age of 74, and was buried in Paihia, Northland, New Zealand. (Behind the St Pauls Anglican stone church Paihia)

THE ITALY STAR

General

The Italy Star is granted for operational service in the Sicily or in Italy from the capture of Pantellaria on 11th June, 1943, until 8th May, 1945, inclusive. This star is also granted for certain operations in Sardina, Greece, Corsica, Elba, Yugoslavia, the Aegean and Dodecanese.

THE WAR MEDAL 1939-45

General

The War Medal 1939-45 was awarded across the British Commonwealth to all fulltime members of the Armed Forces for 28 days service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 irrespective of where they were serving. On the obverse of this medal is the effigy of King George VI.

THE AFRICAN STAR

General
GREECE OR CRETE

New Zealand soldiers who were captured or killed in Greece or Crete in 1941 had qualified for the Africa Star before entering Greece. This was because they entered and/or were based in Egypt (North Africa) on or after 10 June 1940, before being sent to Greece.

THE FRANCE AND GERMANY STAR

General

The France and Germany Star is granted for operational service in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany between the 6th June, 1944 and the 8th May, 1945, inclusive.
